With the Claude Frontier Academy, Anthropic is investing 100 million dollars. By the end of 2027, 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers are to be certified.

Anthropic launched the Claude Frontier Academy on October 2. The company is providing 100 million US dollars for the initiative and aims to train a total of 10,000 so-called Frontier Deployed Engineers (FDEs) by the end of 2027. These are software developers in enterprises and consulting firms who are tasked with bringing AI systems based on Claude into production. Employees from Accenture, Bain, Capgemini, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Deloitte, McKinsey, Morgan Stanley, and Novo Nordisk are participating in the initial cohorts.

“The hard part is building that depth of talent: engineers with the highest level of AI competence who can take Claude from an idea to a system in production, turning it into faster processes as well as new products and services.”

In-Person Program and Twelve-Week Residency

The Academy’s first program is called the Frontier Deployed Engineer Residency and, according to Anthropic, is modeled on medical residency training. Experienced software developers who have already worked with large language models are eligible to participate. Experience with AI agents is not required. Participation is by nomination from the employee’s company, and each participant brings a concrete Claude project.

To kick off the program, participants undergo a multi-day in-person course with Anthropic engineers and licensed instructors. They work through a simulated enterprise deployment—from use-case selection and security review to handoff—and take a practical exam. Those who pass receive the Claude Resident Engineer badge and implement a real-world use case in their own company during a twelve-week residency. After passing another exam, they earn the Claude Frontier Deployed Engineer badge. Anthropic expects the first graduates in early 2027. Cohorts are currently running in San Francisco, New York, and London.

Building on the Partner Network

The Academy complements the Claude Partner Network. According to Anthropic, employees from 46,000 companies have earned more than 175,000 Claude certifications there, with nearly 4,000 individuals having completed the Basecamp training program.

At the end of September, market research firm Gartner had predicted that by 2028, around 70 percent of enterprises will abandon agentic AI built for them by vendors via forward-deployed engineering. As reasons, Gartner cited rising costs and customers’ lack of internal capabilities to further develop the solutions, among other factors.
