OpenAI is apparently working on “o”, a permanently active assistant for ChatGPT. A configuration points to a dedicated email feature.
OpenAI is apparently preparing a new, permanently active assistant for ChatGPT. It bears the name “o”. Hints of the unannounced feature were briefly visible online. OpenAI has neither confirmed nor denied the development.
Briefly Listed as a Plan Feature
As users on X discovered, “o, your always-on assistant” was temporarily listed as a feature of the ChatGPT Pro plan for 100 US dollars. The same list included increased usage of Work and Codex, maximum memory for the Memory feature, 100 GB of file storage, and early access to new features. The same features previously appeared in the description of the likewise unannounced Pro Max plan for 500 dollars.
Configuration with Email Suffix
Additionally, a dynamic configuration contains the entry display_name: “o” along with email_suffix: “-o”. This suggests that the assistant could receive its own email feature or email identity. A permanently active assistant could continue working on tasks even when users are not actively using ChatGPT. What specific features OpenAI is planning remains unknown.
Separate from Internal Agent System “Aeon”
There were previously references to an internal system named “Aeon”, which relates to custom agents for ChatGPT Workspaces. According to BleepingComputer, “o” appears to be separate from it and intended for end consumers.
DevDay on September 29
OpenAI is hosting its DevDay 2026 developer conference on September 29 in San Francisco. There, the company intends to present new features and tools. Whether “o” will be presented there remains open.
