OpenAI has released a ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, making it available on all major operating systems for the first time.

“Linux was one of the most requested platforms for the desktop app, and this release brings ChatGPT and Codex to every major desktop operating system.”

ChatGPT: support for Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora
The new application brings ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and the coding assistant Codex to several Linux distributions and has been available for download worldwide since Tuesday. Officially supported are the desktop versions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. Since these distributions also serve as the basis for numerous derivative variants, the app is likely to run on many other, technically related Linux systems as well, according to TechCrunch.
With this step, OpenAI follows competitor Anthropic, which had already released its own Claude desktop app for Linux about a month earlier. Anthropic’s application supports Ubuntu from version 22.04 and Debian from version 12.
