According to a report by trade publication The Information, Apple brought forward the announcement of the new Mac mini and Mac Studio models.

Typically, Apple only presents new Mac models in the autumn, usually in October or November. The announcement at the end of August thus came unusually early, just a few weeks before the actual iPhone event. According to The Information, the AI-driven boom in sales of Mac Studio and Mac mini is behind the advanced date. Apple specifically promoted the ability to combine multiple Mac Studio devices into a single, more powerful system to run large frontier AI models, a feature clearly targeted at business and developer customers rather than ordinary consumers.

Back in June, Apple made this shift toward business buyers visible at its own event titled “Business at the Park” featuring executives from Ford, Disney, and Anthropic, where the Mac mini was reportedly a central focus. Nevertheless, the actual rush of corporate customers for high-performance desktop Macs caught the company unprepared, according to reports.

Apple: Lack of business sales team

According to reports, Apple had neither its own business development team nor dedicated developer relations personnel, and lacked its own enterprise AI strategy. Companies wanting to buy direct access to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure were reportedly turned away. Instead, Apple relies on external partners such as WebAI and Mount Thor, which offer AI tools and execution environments based on Apple hardware. According to Cult of Mac, which also cites The Information, OpenAI purchased tens of thousands of Mac mini and Mac Studio devices in recent months for its own purposes, such as reinforcement learning and agentic AI workflows for computer use, while Anthropic rents corresponding Mac devices via AWS due to its close collaboration with Amazon.

Bottlenecks exacerbated by concurrent memory shortage

The increased demand for Mac hardware for AI applications coincides with the global memory chip shortage, causing numerous Mac mini and Mac Studio configurations to be virtually unavailable for months. According to reports, some business customers are already pivoting to alternative hardware such as Nvidia’s compact AI desktop DGX Spark, as Apple’s own high-end configurations remain difficult to obtain. Most of the new models are reportedly not scheduled to actually ship until the third week of September, following an unusually long pre-order phase designed to allow Apple to better align its supply chain and manufacturing with the surged demand.
