Several iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max owners report unexpected restarts while using Face ID, Apple Pay and making calls.
Some owners of Apple’s new iPhone 18 models say their devices have unexpectedly restarted. It remains unclear whether the issue is caused by a hardware defect or a software problem.
Incidents Involving Face ID, Apple Pay and Calls
Several users have shared their experiences on social media. One Reddit user said their iPhone 18 Pro Max triggered a so-called panic restart three times within the first 24 hours while using Face ID and once while charging Apple Wallet. After resetting Face ID, the device initially worked normally, but another reset was later required.
Another user reported a hard restart after using Apple Pay, while a third said their iPhone restarted in the middle of a phone call.
Users Disagree on the Cause
Commenters disagree over whether a hardware defect or a software bug in the current version of iOS 27 is responsible. One user noted that the latest software update had not caused similar problems on their iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Another user reported that their device had restarted on its own twice, including once in the middle of a phone call. Their Apple Watch Series 12 had also restarted without warning. According to commenters, this could indicate that the issue is not limited to iPhones.
No Official Statement From Apple
Apple has not yet issued an official statement about the reported problem. However, several affected users said Apple replaced their devices after they contacted support. In one case, the replacement was reportedly attributed to a defective individual unit.
Other users said the problem returned even after their devices were replaced. “I’m not doing a third replacement,” one user wrote.
Apple unveiled its new smartphones in early September, also announcing its first foldable model, the iPhone Duo, which is scheduled to go on sale October 23. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are already available, starting at $1,200 USD.
