According to 404 Media, the consulting firm will only centrally finance $29 per person. Additional costs must be absorbed by projects or teams.
Consulting giant Accenture is limiting centrally funded usage of Claude for many of its employees to 29 US dollars per person per month. This was reported by US media outlet 404 Media, citing an internal announcement titled “Claude Enterprise Users: Important Updates to Licensing and Usage Costs.” According to the report, some employees had been spending up to $1,000 per month on Claude. Accenture has not yet publicly commented on the report.
Additional Costs via Projects
Anyone exceeding the $29 budget must find a project or team willing to cover the additional expenses. A portion of the workforce uses a premium plan with an allowance of $250 per week, but the majority remains on the standard tier. According to 404 Media, internal messages reveal employees searching for ways to continue using Claude to their customary extent, while criticizing that switching to the premium plan takes too long. “Honestly, it’s disappointing,” wrote one employee, who reportedly uses Claude to develop an AI tool for Accenture clients.
Accenture is among Anthropic’s major partners. Employees of the firm participate in initiatives such as the Claude Frontier Academy, through which Anthropic aims to train developers for deploying AI systems in production.
Companies Rein in AI Spending
Accenture is not the only company putting the brakes on AI expenditure. According to reports, Uber had already exhausted its 2026 AI budget after four months, primarily due to heavy token consumption by staff. Uber President Andrew Macdonald subsequently explained that he did not see the higher usage translating into a corresponding increase in useful features for customers.
Microsoft has also introduced consumption-based billing for its Copilot platform. There, compute-intensive agentic capabilities are billed on top of the user license via so-called Copilot Credits. Administrators can configure spending limits for these at both the organizational and user levels.
