Google DeepMind has launched the DeepMind Institute (DMI), a new platform designed to promote interdisciplinary thinking about artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Google DeepMind has established the DeepMind Institute (DMI), a new platform aimed at fostering interdisciplinary research and debate around the opportunities and risks of artificial general intelligence (AGI). The company published the institute’s founding essay in July 2026, followed by an updated version in September.

The Goal: Interdisciplinary Research on AGI

According to its mission statement, the institute aims to drive research, collaboration, and debate around key technical and societal questions in the AGI era.

The topics outlined in the founding essay include what people will value in the future and how AGI could reshape our understanding of what it means to be human. They also address how AGI systems and the networks of agents they create can be developed and regulated safely, as well as which institutions and regulatory frameworks may need to adapt to AGI or be fundamentally rethought.

The Institute’s Founders and Leadership

The DMI is led by three people: Shane Legg, co-founder and Chief AGI Scientist at Google DeepMind; James Manyika, President of Research, Labs, Technology & Society; and Demis Hassabis, co-founder and Chairman of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist at Alphabet. Shane Legg also serves as the institute’s Managing Editor.

As a platform, the DMI is open to researchers and thinkers from Google DeepMind, Google, and the broader global research community. They can use the platform to publish their own contributions on a world shaped by AGI.

Opportunities and Risks Highlighted in the Founding Essay

In the founding essay, the authors argue that today’s AI systems already demonstrate impressive capabilities and that the pace of development suggests AGI could be approaching. At the same time, current systems can still fail at simple tasks and lack the consistency and creativity required for fully capable AGI.

The authors point to several potential benefits, including new ways to understand and treat diseases, the development of clean energy, and greater economic prosperity.

At the same time, the essay identifies specific risks:

“We’re already seeing the implications of increasingly capable AI for cybersecurity and biorisks, and there is the potential for loss of control in future self-improving systems.”

A note at the end of the essay makes clear that the contributions published on the platform represent the ideas and research of their respective authors. They should not be interpreted as official positions held by Google.
