Meta is in talks to lease computing power to Anthropic in a deal worth up to 10 billion dollars, marking Meta’s potential entry into cloud computing.

Meta Platforms is in talks to lease computing power to the AI company Anthropic. The potential contract could be worth up to 10 billion US dollars over a two-year term. The negotiations are in an early stage and a final agreement is not guaranteed. Anthropic, the developer of the programming assistant Claude Code, proposed the deal in June 2026. According to insider reports, the payment would be made in monthly installments, with clauses allowing for an early exit. Anthropic declined to comment, while Meta did not immediately respond to inquiries.

Meta’s planned entry into the cloud market

For Meta, the agreement would mark the entry into a new business area, as the group has not previously sold infrastructure for external computing power. The initiative aims to diversify revenue away from the traditional advertising business. At the same time, Meta would enter into direct competition with specialized cloud providers such as CoreWeave or Nebius. At the shareholder meeting in May 2026, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg already hinted at this development. He stated that entering cloud computing was “definitely an option” because companies approach the group almost every week regarding access to AI models or spare computing power.

Rising demand in the AI industry

The talks reflect the rapidly growing demand for computing capacities to develop advanced AI tools. Anthropic is pursuing a similar strategy with this move as in May 2026. At that time, the startup concluded an agreement with SpaceX to utilize the computing power of the Colossus 1 data center in Memphis. According to reports, Meta is currently building its own cloud structure to market surplus server capacities to developers and host AI models.
