The cyberwar documentary Midnight in the War Room will make its world premiere at Black Hat USA 2026 in Las Vegas. The film explores the human side of cybersecurity and the people behind the fight against cyberattacks.
The world premiere will take place on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at Oceanside A on Level 2 of the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. All registered Black Hat USA attendees will have access to the screening. The film was produced in part by cybersecurity provider Semperis.
High Profile Cast from Politics and Cybersecurity
For Midnight in the War Room, the filmmakers brought more than 50 international experts, defenders, journalists, and former hackers in front of the camera. Among the best known are Chris Inglis, the first U.S. National Cyber Director, and Jen Easterly, former director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Both have regularly appeared as speakers at Black Hat in recent years.
The documentary also features BBC cyber correspondent Joe Tidy and security researcher and content creator John Hammond. Former CIA Director David Petraeus also appears in the film, as does Marcus Hutchins, who played a key role in containing the WannaCry ransomware attack in 2017. Cyberpsychologist Mary Aiken adds a scientific perspective on the psychological dimensions of cyberattacks and the efforts to defend against them.
A Focus on Burnout and Moral Gray Areas
At its core, the documentary focuses on the emotional and psychological toll placed on cybersecurity professionals. CISOs responsible for protecting critical infrastructure are at the heart of the story. The film examines issues including burnout and the constant pressure and responsibility that come with defending against cyberattacks.
Interviews with former attackers, some of whom have already served prison sentences, provide an additional perspective. Their accounts are intended to offer an unfiltered look into the mindset of cybercriminals and attackers.
The filmmakers describe the result as an uncompromising portrait of cyberwar as a deeply human conflict, shaped by courage, exhaustion, and moral complexity.
