OpenAI is preparing its most ambitious overhaul of ChatGPT to date. The company aims to transform its flagship chatbot into a full-scale “super app” featuring autonomous AI agents, developer tools, and integrated third-party services — all ahead of a planned IPO.

According to a report by the Financial Times, based on current and former employees, the strategy is primarily designed to accelerate revenue growth ahead of a potential public listing this year. At the same time, OpenAI is reallocating resources to strengthen its position in the enterprise market and compete more directly with rival Anthropic.

One senior OpenAI executive was quoted in the report with a stark assessment: “Chat is dead.”

Monetizing ChatGPT through autonomous AI agents

The rollout of the redesign is expected to begin in the coming weeks, starting with both the web platform and mobile apps. The move addresses a key challenge for OpenAI: limited monetization of its massive user base.

Reports indicate that only around 4% of global users currently pay for ChatGPT, while the remaining 96% use the free tier. By introducing autonomous AI agents capable of handling complex tasks — such as booking travel, managing schedules, or summarizing large datasets — OpenAI aims to significantly increase the product’s value proposition.

“What we are working toward is for you to have your own personal agent that is capable of helping you with everything in your life, whether in your private life or at work.”

Codex becomes a key growth driver

As part of the restructuring, the company is also expanding investment in its software development tool Codex. The system can write, debug, explain, and execute code autonomously. Insiders say Codex already accounts for a meaningful share of revenue, driven largely by paying users. With increased focus, OpenAI hopes to scale this segment further.

Currently, enterprise customers contribute around 40% of OpenAI’s total revenue. Management expects this share to rise to 50% by the end of the year. The strategic shift brings OpenAI closer to the enterprise-first approach long pursued by Anthropic. Both companies are now effectively racing toward the public markets, with AI platforms evolving from chat interfaces into full ecosystem products.
