Hackers threaten Streamlabs with extortion: The group ShinyHunters demands contact by August 21. Data of millions threatened.
The well-known extortion group ShinyHunters claims to have compromised software provider Streamlabs. On their leak site on the darknet, the gang published a final warning to the company requesting contact by August 21. Otherwise, the criminals threaten to publish stolen data.
So far, however, the attackers have not provided any data samples, screenshots, or technical details confirming the actual breach into the systems. Whether and to what extent sensitive data has been exfiltrated cannot currently be independently verified by security researchers.
High Risk for Millions of Streamers
Should the incident be confirmed, the data theft would have significant consequences for the streaming industry:
- Huge user base: According to its own figures, more than 15 million content creators use Streamlabs’ tools.
- Market dominance on Twitch: Around 70 percent of all Twitch broadcasters rely on the software for overlays, donation systems, alerts, and chat features.
- Potential damage: Affected users could be exposed to the risk of phishing attacks, account takeovers, or the disclosure of sensitive payment and account data.
Streamlabs was founded in 2014 and acquired in 2019 by Swiss hardware giant Logitech for around 89 million US dollars.
Well-Known Extortion Group with a History
ShinyHunters is among the most active and aggressive groups in cyber extortion. In recent months and years, the gang has repeatedly made headlines with spectacular data thefts:
- Extensive attacks: Victims include ticket provider Ticketmaster (560 million data records), Salesforce customers, Sysco, Ralph Lauren, Cisco, and the European Commission.
- Tactics: The group frequently uses phishing, social engineering, or stolen access credentials to infiltrate cloud environments and subsequently extort high ransoms.
