After cutting around 8,000 jobs, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged organizational mistakes during the company’s restructuring around artificial intelligence.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has admitted in an internal memo to employees that the company made mistakes while shifting its focus toward artificial intelligence. In the message, obtained by Reuters, the executive attempted to reassure staff about Meta’s future direction. Zuckerberg wrote:

He added that his focus is now on providing as much stability as possible. At the same time, Zuckerberg cautioned: “I don’t want to overpromise because the world is changing in ways that are outside our control.” He ruled out further company-wide layoffs for the remainder of 2026.

Workforce Cuts and Organizational Challenges at Meta

In May 2026, Meta announced a major restructuring that included cutting around 10 percent of its global workforce, affecting nearly 8,000 employees. At the same time, around 7,000 workers were reassigned to new artificial intelligence projects.

The Meta chief plans to eventually identify new roles for employees currently involved in training AI models. Regarding this organizational flexibility, the memo stated: “By creating important new roles for people, we were also able to reduce the size of teams, knowing that we could transfer some people back if we made mistakes in certain areas.”

The internal transition reportedly caused significant structural challenges. Some AI divisions introduced extremely flat management structures. Within the Applied AI Engineering division, this resulted in management ratios of up to 50 employees per manager. Zuckerberg announced plans to reduce these unusually broad management spans.

To strengthen collaboration between smaller teams, Meta plans to hold a large-scale hackathon in July 2026 and increase budgets for company events. According to current forecasts, spending on AI infrastructure is expected to reach between $125 billion and $145 billion.

Recent announcements about possible stock issuances to help fund these investments caused Meta’s share price to fall by more than five percent.
