Savings on the chip: Leaks reveal why Google is opting out of a rarely used hardware security feature on the Pixel 11.
As part of chip development for the Pixel 11 generation, Google is making fundamental design decisions. As revealed by reports from Notebookcheck and leaked documents on the roadmap for the upcoming Tensor G6 processor, the US company will omit a special hardware security feature in the future. The component had been integrated in earlier iterations for highly specific isolation and protection functions, but played virtually no role in the everyday practical use of most users.
The move is part of a comprehensive realignment of Google’s custom chip division. To use the silicon wafer area at manufacturer TSMC more efficiently, lower production costs, and reduce heat generation in the smartphone, Google is cutting memory-intensive niche components from the layout. Telemetry data and developer feedback had shown that the affected module remained virtually unused by regular Android apps.
Pixel 11: The story behind the course correction
The decision marks a pragmatic U-turn in Google’s hardware strategy. In earlier Tensor generations, the developer attempted to establish unique selling points over vendors like Qualcomm or Apple through increasingly complex, proprietary security architectures. In practice, however, the required chip real estate proved too costly relative to the actual added value for consumers.
With the Pixel 11, Google is instead relying on established, standardized ARM security architectures and optimized software solutions that guarantee comparable protection without weighing down chip efficiency.
