An automatic update via Windows delivers an app to PCs with certain LG monitors, displaying regular McAfee trial ads.
According to reports by VideoCardz and testing conducted by the channel Gamers Nexus, connecting certain LG monitors to a Windows PC triggers the automatic installation of a software component. Extension and software packages from LG are downloaded via Windows Update. Immediately afterward, the LG Monitor App Installer appears on the system. The installation takes place without obtaining prior consent or confirmation from the user.
Regular pop-ups for trial subscriptions
In a series of tests with the LG UltraGear 34GX900A-B monitor model, Gamers Nexus examined the application’s behavior across 32 consecutive system boots. During 31 of these boots, the software displayed a promotional pop-up for a McAfee trial offer. This trial converts into a paid subscription after 30 days. On one of the remaining boots, a native monitor utility from LG was promoted instead.
Affected devices and existing user reports
The automatic distribution is not limited to newly purchased hardware. This behavior was also demonstrated on an LG UltraFine 32UN880-B acquired three years earlier. User complaints regarding the LG Monitor App Installer date back to at least 2024. Due to a sharp increase in recent reports, it is expected that a larger number of monitor models are currently receiving the software via the update function.
