From quantitative AI models and identities for AI agents to biological computing, Gartner outlines the technology trends set to reshape enterprise IT in 2027.

Research firm Gartner has unveiled its ten strategic technology trends for 2027 at the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo in Orlando. According to Gartner, these trends are expected to bring significant disruption and new opportunities for CIOs and IT leaders over the next five years.

“The critical friction today is that AI systems operate in an architectural vacuum, generating software faster than humans can review it, creating unmanaged credential paths and binding processes to single-source vendor monopolies. To prevent this systemic exposure, organizations must move from a passive observer of model capabilities to an active architect of organization, human and machine boundaries.”

Gene Alvarez, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner

Organizations must actively shape the boundaries between business operations, people, and machines.

Technology Trends: Specialized AI Models

Three of the trends focus on new types of AI models. Large Quantitative Models (LQMs) are modular, hybrid neural networks designed to process and analyze quantitative data. They are intended to replace general-purpose language models for computational tasks where their probabilistic approach can introduce errors and compliance risks. Gartner sees potential applications in automated forecasting, particularly in regulated industries such as finance and healthcare.

Speech Reasoning Models are AI systems that reason directly from audio data, tracking context and intent throughout an entire conversation. According to Gartner, these models could enable the automation of complex customer service interactions. World Models are designed to give machines an understanding of space, time, and cause and effect. Autonomous agents can use them to simulate future states and assess the potential consequences of their actions before executing them. Gartner identifies investment in robotics, autonomous vehicles, and spatial computing as key drivers of this trend.

Context and Control for AI Agents

AI Context Platforms provide AI agents with the knowledge they need to interpret inputs and act in line with business objectives. Gartner predicts that by 2027, organizations that prioritize semantics in AI-ready data could improve the accuracy of agentic AI by up to 80 percent while reducing costs by up to 60 percent.

An Agent Coding Harness is a closed-loop control system that governs the behavior of autonomous coding agents throughout the software development lifecycle. Without such a system, developers would have to review machine-generated output manually, potentially erasing the productivity gains these agents are meant to deliver.

Securing Agents and Systems

Gartner defines AI Agent Identity as dynamic, policy-driven access permissions for AI agents that replace static credentials. Gartner predicts that by 2028, around 25 percent of enterprise security incidents will stem from AI agent misuse, driven by uncontrolled machine permissions and outdated credential management practices. Autonomous Exposure Remediation (AER) combines AI and automation to identify, prioritize, and remediate vulnerabilities across the entire IT environment. Patches and virtual patches are automatically tested and deployed as part of the process.

Digital Sovereignty and Disposable Software

Sovereign Tech encompasses hardware, software, databases, and AI models designed to provide technically and legally viable exit options from critical vendors. Gartner expects more than 75 percent of organizations outside the United States to adopt digital sovereignty strategies by 2030 and move critical workloads accordingly. Disposable Applications are applications developed for a specific purpose and decommissioned once that purpose has been served. According to Gartner, this approach is changing how software is purchased, designed, and budgeted.

Biological Computing in the Cloud

The tenth trend is Wetware as a Service. It refers to cloud-based access to living or synthetic biological systems used for computation. These organic processors are intended to leverage the adaptability of biochemical networks to execute complex algorithms with high energy efficiency. Gartner attributes the emergence of this trend to the limitations of conventional silicon-based hardware, which cannot meet AI’s growing energy demands indefinitely.

In Europe, Gartner will present these trends at the IT Symposium/Xpo in Barcelona from November 9 to 12.
